Cult members kill 16-year-old girl over mobile phone in Bayelsa

Unidentified gunmen , suspected to be cult members, killed a teenage girl on Thursday at Amarata area of Yenagoa , Bayelsa State. It was learnt that the suspected cult members killed the teenager , identified simply as Seiyefa Fred , aged 16 , for allegedly refusing to hand over her mobile phone to them .The Police Public Relations Officer , Bayelsa State Command , Deputy Superintendent of Police Asinim Butswat , confirmed the incident .

The PPRO said that after the victim was shot , she was rushed to the hospital where she was confirmed dead.

Shedding light on the murder , the command ’ s spokesman said , “ On November 8 , 2018 , at about 8 . 30 pm , unknown suspected cult members at Amarata , Yenagoa, shot one Seiyefa Fred , a female aged 16 , while trying to dispossess her of her mobile phone . The victim was immediately rushed to the hospital , where she was confirmed dead . ”

Butswat noted that the police had since swung into action and were working on promising leads that would reveal the identities of the suspects as efforts were being intensified to arrest them .

“ The command has embarked on community engagement meetings with relevant youth groups in a bid to stem the tide of cult – related activities in the state . Members of the public should continue to assist the police with useful information to combat crime in Bayelsa State, ” the police spokesman said .

Meanwhile , the Bayelsa State Government has condemned the murder of Fred , a 100 level student of the state – owned Niger Delta University , by the suspected cult members.

The state Commissioner for Information and Orientation , Mr . Daniel Iworiso -Markson, described the murder of Fred as shocking , reprehensible and unacceptable .

He said that the government would do everything to ensure that those who perpetrated the act were arrested and brought to justice .

Iworiso – Markson urged the people of the state to be united , adding that the government would intensify efforts to rid Bayelsa of cult members and criminals who do not value human life .

He noted that the government was in touch with the police authorities in the state and that investigation had commenced to find those responsible for Fred ’ s death .

He said , “ The Government of Bayelsa received with shock the gruesome murder of a 100 level student of the Niger Delta University by people suspected to be cult members on a robbery mission . ”
