Luka Modric has had an extraordinary season. Not only did he guide Real Madrid to their third consecutive Champions League triumph, but he was given the Golden Ball as he captained Croatia to the World Cup final.

His success led him to winning the UEFA’s Player of the Year last Thursday.

But it was Cristiano Ronaldo’s no-show in Monaco that was the biggest talking point on the night.

It was reported the day after that Ronaldo decided against attending as he knew he was not going to win the award.

Massimiliano Allegri confirmed that Ronaldo was ‘angry’ after not winning the award and that it was his decision to not travel to Monaco.

“It was his personal decision and like all personal decisions, it is to be respected,” Allegri said last week, per ESPN.

“He was angry yesterday because he won the Champions League scoring 15 goals. This shows that he always wants to be the best.”

One man who has kept quiet in this saga is Modric. But he has now had his say.

Speaking after his Croatia side drew 1-1 with Portugal, the 32-year-old revealed that Ronaldo sent him a truly classy message after he won the award.

“I have a good relationship with Cristiano,” he said. “For me, individual prizes are important, but not as important as collectives.

“They are a good thing, but I’m not obsessed with it. Whatever has to happen will happen.

“He [Ronaldo] spoke to me. He sent me a congratulatory message saying, ‘I’m happy for you, you deserve it, and I hope to see you soon.’

“As I said, we have a good relationship, no matter what people say. What matters is that he sent me a message after winning.”

That is pure class. Fair play to Ronaldo, he didn’t have to send that at all.

The Portuguese forward may not have covered himself in glory for failing to turn up to the awards, but he’s showed what sort of man he is with that text.

Contrary to other reports, it seems the 33-year-old has taken losing out on the award to his former teammate well.

And there’s no doubt that Modric appreciated the gesture from his former Real Madrid teammate.
