The South- East leadership of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has ordered the herdsmen in Ebonyi state to leave the state for sometime pending when tensions will calm down. The directive came following the attack on innocent citizens in Ishielu Local Government Area of the state where about 15 villagers were reported to have been killed by suspected criminal Fulani herdsmen.
The group said that if herdsmen leave the state for now, it would create room for peace in the state, and also give security operatives the space to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter.
The South- East Zonal Chairman of the group, Gidado Sidikki, made the statement while addressing newsmen in Anambra state on Wednesday.
He said that they have ordered herdsmen in Ebonyi state to relocate from the state for now. He said that they are afraid herdsmen in the state may be killed unjustly in a reprisal attack, and that they have asked them to leave the state for now, and return only when the tensions are down.
He expressed sadness over what happened in Ishielu Local Government Area of the state some days ago, saying that Fulani herdsmen have been living peacefully with the host community for a long time, and asked why this should happen now.
He said that the Miyetti Allah group, in the zone under his watch, have been monitoring the activities of herdsmen in the five states in the South- East- Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi and Abia- to ensure the herdsmen do not clash with the host communities while doing their business.
He said that it will be a big shock if investigations eventually reveal that it was Fulani herdsmen that were responsible for the killing of those villagers in Ishielu.
He urged security operatives to make sure they track down the killers and make them to face the full wrath of the law.
Last week, Nigerians had received the shocking news that armed men had invaded Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi state and slaughtered about 15 people to death. Reports had said that the killings were carried out by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
The attack had attracted condemnation from members of the public, with many calling on security operatives to leave no stone unturned in their search for the killers.
In his reaction to the killing, Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi had said that he knows the people behind the attack. And since then the public has been waiting to hear that the killers have been apprehended.
