CAF Official Website Hacked and Defaced By Russian Hackers – President Responds
The website of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) was hacked by a Russian group protesting the ongoing African Cup of Nations in Gabon.
Calling themselves ‘New World Hackers’, the group took down the CAF website over the weekend, claiming it is in protest of Gabon hosting the ongoing Cup of African Nations.
“Gabon is a country of dictatorship,” a member of the group told BBC Sport.
Protests have sprung up in the country hosting the biennal Afcon tourney, with protestors unhappy with the government of Ali Bongo, who won disputed elections last year and has been accused of hanging onto power.
The group told the BBC they hacked the website of Total as well – the oil company are sponsoring this year’s tournament.
‘New World Hackers’ say their hack is in solidarity with the Gabonese protesting the tourney.
“Caf has taken action but we can’t certify 100% it will not happen again,” Junior Binyam, the governing body’s communications director, told BBC Sport.
“Even CIA servers are hacked.”
