The Department of States Service (DSS) has tackled the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for defending the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), asking if he’s a member of the terrorist group.

This was contained in a terse statement released via its Twitter handle on Tuesday, July 18, 2023.

The DSS who specifically slammed an IPOB/ESN lawyer Maxwell Okpara, cautioned Nigerians against the by the IPOB lawyer, saying it’s not for Nigeria’s sake.

The statement reads; “A Biafran Republic agitator and Outlawed IPOB counsel defending the suspended CBN Governor. Is IPOB defending one of theirs???? What a contradiction…..hmmm…what’s the connection? Is someone telling us something? May Maxwell be properly educated on points of law, please.

“Charge and bail, overzealous uninformed IPOB/ESN lawyer Maxwell Okpara mobilises other like minded lawyers against DGSS. Futile Efforts. Well, Nigerians, beware! This is in bad faith. Transferred aggression.”

The DSS had earlier accused the embattled CBN governor Emefile of funding “unknown gunmen” and members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

IPOB is a separatist organisation that calls for the secession of the five Igbo-dominated states in South-east Nigeria and parts of neighbouring states as an independent Biafra nation.

The group blamed for violent acts in the South-east region in recent years has been declared a terrorist organiation and proscribed by a court as far back as September 2017.

The effort to arrest Emefiele was successful after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu suspended him as the governor of the apex bank in the country.

The Nigerian government through the DSS on July 15, 2023, charged the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
