Labour Party candidate for the March 18 governorship election in Lagos state, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour has lambasted those doubting his Yoruba heritage.

Speaking in an interview with Arise , the Labour Party Chieftain admitted that he feels hurt whenever he hears people questioning his Yoruba heritage when the history of his family in Lagos state dates back to over 400 years ago.

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour however, accused his adversaries of playing politics of ethnicity, saying they only remember the Yoruba agenda when it suits them best.

The Labour Party governorship hopeful wondered what Bola Tinubu and Sanwo-Olu did when Yorubas were killed by herdsmen in the southwest.

He said if something like fire outbreak occurs in a Kano market, Bola Tinubu will be there to make donation but, when such happens in Lagos state, he prefers to keep quiet.

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour said “It’s so painful to see how people that are not even from Lagos, are trying to question my pedigree in Lagos that goes back to over 400 years, they are trying to make this a ‘you are voting for an Igbo governor. My wife is Igbo, my grandmother gave me Chinedu and my grandfather gave me Gbadebo, so I don’t understand.

“Anyway, a governor that dodged debate five times, has clearly decided that this conversation is not going to be issue based. This Yoruba that people want to carry on, it should be not just lip service.

“When herdsmen were coming and killing people in southwest, what was Sanwo-Olu and Bola Tinubu saying? When Akeredolu a fellow governor stood up for his people, when people like pa Ayo Adebanjo stood up for his people, what were they saying? You will now find that it’s only when it is time to play politics that they start reminding people but, what have they done for the Yoruba people? Market burns in Lagos state, Tinubu is quiet, market burns in Kano, Tinubu will go there and give them money.”
