The horrifying story behind Dan Burn’s missing finger – he did it when he was just 13
The defender has played an important role for Newcastle in the Premier League this season.
Burn, signed from Brighton for £13 million in January, has missed just one league match this campaign. And his performances at the heart of Newcastle’s defence have been very impressive.
Eddie Howe’s side sit third in the table with just one defeat so far this season.
They will conclude a very positive 2022 with a Boxing Day trip to Leicester before they host Leeds on New Year’s Eve.
If they are to qualify for next season’s Champions League, Burn will play an important role in keeping the Toon Army tight at the back
Burn has been in the Premier League for many years having spent two-and-a-half seasons in the top-flight for Brighton before his move to Newcastle.
Despite that, some fans only recently noticed that he has a finger missing.
It was during a match for Newcastle against Chelsea in March where Sky Sports replays showed Burn with his hands to his face – clearly showing a missing digit.
It was the first time many saw Burn’s missing finger.
So, what’s the story behind it?
Why does Dan Burn have a finger missing?
But what’s the story behind it? As a big, tough defender it’s easy to assume that it was a football-related injury.
But you’d be wrong.
While he’s never actually spoken about it, according to the Free Library it happened when he was just 13.
Burn was wearing a ring when he attempted to climb a fence with spikes on it (we can only assume to retrieve a football!) However, the ring got caught in a spike and completely ripped off the finger.
