Derico and his gang committed one of the most terrible crime against humanity on December 2000, they attacked a comnercial bus occupied to the brim by 59 passengers at the Upper Iweka in Onitsha.

After robbing every single person in the bus, everybody in the bus were executed including women and children on the orders Derico. His boys then proceeded to open fire on all the passengers and only 4 persons survived.

After that terrible incident, Mr Chinwoke Mbadinuju who was the then governor of Anambra state had no other option than to bring in the Bakassi Boys to help salvage the State.

On Tuesday, 3 July 2001, If this date is your birthday, then u deserve one bottle of whatever your brand plus one plate of Nkwobi because that was the day Onitsha, and indeed Anambra State was liberated.

On the 3 July 2001, Derico was on a bus going from Agbor to Onitsha and on getting to the Onitsha section of the head Bridge, his bus was apprehended by the Dreaded Bakassi Boys.

Sensing possible danger, the Crime king Jumped out from the Window in attempt to run away but before he could make the first step after jumping out, his left ear was chopped off by a Bakassi and that was how Derico was captured.

A man who thought he was above the law and invincible started crying and pleaded for his life as he was taken to the hospital for treatment because he was profusely bleeding.

When news of his capture broke, everyone in Anambra State celebrated as if they had won a lottery.

The Bakassi Boys had developed a fearful and blood thirsty system of dealing with suspects and Derico’ s days were surely coming to a disgraceful end from the day he was caught.

On the 9 July 2001 which was barely six days after Derico was captured at the Niger Bridge, the Bakassi Boys did to him as was predicted by many. They Chanted war songs as they drove in their vehicles around the community and stopped at Ochanja Market Junction along the popular Upper Iweka Road in Onitsha.

People of Anambra shouted in excitement as the vehicles of the Bakassi boys halted and many people trooped to the scene to witness the final days of the Crime King.

Derico was dragged out from the bus and he looked haggered and seriously beaten. He had machete’ s cuts on his body and gashes to show his ordeals in the hands of bakassi boys.

He was in severe pains but no one cared as chanting of war songs continued.

Okpompi, one of the commanders of the Bakassi Boys addressed the crowd and reminded them that they were in the state to fight crime and not for politics.

He handed over the microphone Derico who started begging for his life to be spared and made flimsy attempts at declaring his innocence.

He said, my name is Oddy aka Derico Nwa Mama. I plead with you the people of Anambra State, please don’ t kill me. I don’ t like bad things. It was when I killed Chiejina that people thought I am a strong man. Please pity me, nobody can identify that I have robbed them before. People just believe that I am a bad guy.

He made it known that while he was on the run, he was housed by a National Assembly member in Abuja. He also revealed that he had two other powerful sponsors, one a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly while the other was the chairman of a local government council.

What was to follow remains one of the most terrible display of public execution in the history of Nigeria. With the speed of a lightening, a cutlass wielded by the strong arm of one of the Bakassi Boys flew and came down with an unforgiving thud, landing on Derico’ s slim neck and beheaded Derico in a flash.

His head rolled on the floor before the crowd while his convulsing body fell on the ground with red blood coming out from his carotid arteries.

With the lifeless body of Derico still on the floor, the people went into wild jubilations as sharp machetes from different directions wielded by the bakassi boys chopped the pitiful remains of Derico into sizable pieces. Derico’ s remains were heaped up and properly rinsed with fuel and set on fire.
