The cancer of the prostate gland is one of the world’s leading cancer. The prostate gland is an important organ in male reproductive systems. Its main function is the production of the seminal fluids in which sperm cells.

Out of every five men, one is likely to have prostate cancer in their lifetime. The likelihood of suffering prostate cancer increases as one ages. Thus, men less than 40 years old are not likely to have prostate cancer.

Your chances of suffering prostate cancer can be largely reduced by a range of activities ranging from regular exercise to monitored diet. Some of these are outlined below:

Eat fruits containing lycopene

Cancers are often associated with the existence of free radicals in the body. These free radicals have inflammatory effects on the cells, thus, leading to the unwanted growth.

However, lycopene – a powerful carotenoid compound with antioxidant properties – present in most reddish or pink coloured fruits, can help reduce your risk of developing prostate cancer, by eliminating these toxic free radicals.

Lycopene can be gotten from eating fruits like watermelon, pawpaw, tomato, carrot and grapefruit.

Fruits and veggies

One common characteristic of fruits and vegetables is their possession of important vitamins and mineral elements – which are beneficial to our immune systems. Vitamin E for instance, is a powerful antioxidant that helps eliminate free radicals from the body thereby reducing the risk of developing prostate cancer.

Less dairy products, red meat and eggs

Certain type of proteins may increase your chances of having prostate cancer if eaten in excess. Thus, it is advisable to cut down on eggs, milk and red meat. Not more than one egg week is recommended

Less alcohol and caffeine

Over – consumption of alcohol, and caffeine may also put you at risk of prostate cancer, Reduce the quantities of these foods you consume. Cutting down on the amount of caffeine and alcohol you take can help reduce your risk of prostate cancer and BPH.

Eat less salt

High levels of salt in your meals makes you vulnerable to prostate cancer and heart problems. The sodium element of table salt can pose health risks to your heart if taken in excess. Consider cutting down on the quantities of salt present in your meals.

Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise may help strengthen your pelvic floor muscles. Studies have shown that men who exercise regularly have lower risks of cancer. Dedicate some time during the week to do some kegels, running, swimming (if you can), and workout in the gym.

Note: Prostate cancer is different from BPH which stands for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Benign means ‘not cancer’ while hyperplasia means an abnormal cell growth. However, both BPH and prostate have similar symptoms, it is advised to go for intensive tests and check – ups before treatments.
