Ighalo Reacts After Helping Manchester United Set New Club Record In Win Vs Brugge
Former Nigeria international Odion Ighalo opened his goalscoring account for Manchester United as they thrashed Club Brugge 5-0 in a Europa League round of 32 second leg tie at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
Additional goals from Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay and Fred (2) saw the Red Devils record their biggest ever win in the Europa League.
With 34 minutes gone, Ighalo popped up in the penalty area and slammed the ball into the net after a first time pass from Juan Mata and just as he promised prior to the game, he dedicated his maiden goal in a United shirt to his late sister who passed away last month.
Speaking post-match, the Manchester United number 25 was delighted to register his name on the scoresheet on his full debut and admitted that there was pressure on his shoulders to score, having fired blanks in his previous three matches in which he came off the bench.
Ighalo told UEFA’s official website : “I’m very happy.
It feels great to have scored.
It’s a moment I’ll cherish for the rest of my life.
I promise to give my best and keep helping the team move forward.
“We know it’s a period of transition.
Some games will be more difficult than others, but we’re confident we can keep improving with the players we have.
“I have been waiting for this.
There was a little bit of pressure, but now I got a goal to start my Manchester United goal career.
It is a team I’ve supported since I was young.
