A nongovernmental organisation in Anambra State, Safenest , on Monday said it has aborted the plot by a family to force their daughter to sell her baby boy for family upkeep .
The executive director of Safenest , Mrs . Oluchukwu Chukwuenyem , stated this at a workshop held in Awka , Anambra State.

The NGO said the family had driven their daughter out of the family house for refusing to heed their advice to sell her baby boy.

Chukwuenyem said , “ The Family of one Miss Oluchukwu , aged 24 , rejected her for refusing to sell her baby boy whom she gave birth to out of wedlock .

“ Oluchukwu , an indigene of Ebonyi State , whose family resides in Awka Etiti in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State , was advised to abort the pregnancy because it was out of wedlock , but she refused , insisting on keeping it .

“ She was , however , picked up by Safenest after she ran away from home to Awka , Anambra State, where she was later delivered of her baby .

“ We contacted her family to break the good news of her delivery to them , but they advised her to sell the baby and to never return to the family with it .

“ We were surprised to hear this , and we have therefore taken it upon ourselves to take care of her and the baby .

“ We ’ ve housed her in a safe location , which we do not want to disclose ; but I can tell you that she is doing well .

“ How much will she sell the baby that will assuage her suffering for nine months ?”
The NGO noted that domestic violence has been on the increase in recent times , resulting in divorce and murder .
