We Gave Our Best Against Argentina – Mikel Obi Holds Back Tears In Reaction To 2-1 Loss
Tearful and emotional Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, was not a happy man following their 2-1 defeat to Argentina on Tuesday night at the FIFA World Cup in Russia.
While speaking after the Super Eagles were defeated 2-1 by a Lionel Messi-led Argentina team on Tuesday night, captain Mikel Obi, said that his team gave their very best.
The Nigerian senior national team will be heading home after their defeat to Argentina in their final Group D fixture at the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Mikel Obi who held back his tears during an interview after the match, said they did all they could, while Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, stated that the players are not so experienced but did their utmost best.
The former Chelsea star who starred in his second FIFA World Cup said tearfully after the game: “It’s what it is. Nothing to say. We conceded two goals, we did everything we could.
“I think my team did everything we could, we stood our ground.”
Mikel also felt that Nigeria should have had another penalty, after Marcos Rojo seemed to have handled the ball in the penalty area.
“Clear handball, clear penalty. It was open. For me a penalty is a penalty. We’ve seen it again and it’s still a penalty,” the Tianjin TEDA midfielder told reporters in the mixed zone.
Marcos Rojo’s late winner four minutes from time gave Argentina the three points.
