Nigeria vs Iceland: Mikel Replies Mourinho’s Criticisms, Confident Super Eagles Will Stay Long In Russia
Despite a 2-0 defeat to Croatia in their first group game last Saturday at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Mikel Obi is very optimistic that the Super Eagles will get a victory against Iceland on Friday.
Speaking while addressing the media at the team’s base in Essentuki, Russia on Wednesday, Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi insisted that the team still harbour hopes of a good outing at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Despite the disappointing 2-0 defeat to Croatia in their first group game last Saturday, the Mikel Obi-led squad must avoid defeat against Iceland at the Volgograd Arena on Friday to avoid early elimination.
Mikel told reporters; “We are very hopeful and confident because everything is still in our own hands. It just depends on how much we want it. The result against Croatia was disappointing but we can fix it.”
According to CompleteSports, the Tiajin Teda of China midfielder also responded to former Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho’s assertion that he cannot play as a playmaker but as a No.6, a defensive midfielder.
He said; “I worked with Mourinho for a long time and he knows me very well. It is very fascinating. I played in this position for the last two years. Nobody complained.
“I feel comfortable to play in both positions and I do everything I can for the team to win. I understand the feelings of everyone because of the result and how we played.”
Mikel admitted that the team have no complaints in terms of their stay in Russia. “We have enjoyed Russia so far.
“We have been able to work and train well. The training facilities, hotel and the people have been great. We hope to qualify and stay longer here so we can get to know more places in Russia.”
Iceland on the other hand were impressive in the 1-1 draw against two-time time champions Argentina.
