Woman Raped By Her Date After Telling Him She Worked At An Abortion Clinic
A woman has bravely relived the moment she was raped by her date after she told him she worked at an abortion clinic.
Calla Hales, director of a clinic in North Carolina, had told him she worked in ‘women’s health’ on their first date a few days earlier, but hadn’t gone into specifics.
After texting back and forth, he asked her if her work included providing abortions.
She said yes, and he claimed it wasn’t a problem, but Calla, 27, said she realised something was wrong as soon as they met up for their second date.
Speaking to Cosmopolitan , Calla said he was acting so ‘weird’ and standoffish that she asked for the bill halfway through their meal, when he went to the bathroom.
Her date became angry when he realised she was leaving, and insisted on walking her to her car.
Calla described how he then attacked her, saying she deserved it: ‘He had me in between the seats, wrapped the seat belt around my neck, and at some point, bit me on my chest.
‘He asked how I could live with myself and said I should repent. That I was a jezebel. That I was a murderer. That he was doing no worse to me than I had done to women.
‘He said he would make me remember him.’
PSA: if you’re mad about the @Cosmopolitan article, feel comforted by the knowledge that I didn’t do it for you. I owe you nothing.
If you feel it’s necessary to explain to me why you feel rape culture is a figment of my imagination, I will feel the need to block you.
I did it for me. For those who are too scared/unsupported to report. For those who are told they’re “lying” or “were asking for it.”
Although she was bruised and bleeding, Calla didn’t press charges because she was afraid of retribution and didn’t want to relive the trauma in court.
She filed an anonymous report with Raleigh Police Department.
But she wasn’t able to leave what happened behind, as she said she began to see her abuser’s face in the protests outside her clinic, BA Preferred Women’s Health Center (APWHC).
And she said she started to get anonymous calls and voice messages asking ‘Do you remember it?’
I keep hearing the words, “why didn’t you report it?” today. Well- if you read, you’d know that I filed a blind report.
She eventually moved over a hundred miles away to work at a different branch of the clinic and try to escape the horrible connections.
Writing on Twitter after the article was published, Calla said she wanted to speak out to help others who may be in a similar situation.
She said she also wanted to highlight the extreme threats and violence that people who work as abortion providers are subjected to in America.
