“End unnecessary arrest of youths” – Egbetokun orders officers
The Nigerian Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an end to unnecessary arrest, detention of youths all over Nigeria.
He also called for an end to the collection of phones and checking of phones by officers at checkpoints.
This was contained in a letter signed by the Department of Operations of the Force Headquarters.
He stated that these activities have continued to portray the Nigeria Police Force in bad image.
He further noted that these activities were the driving force behind the EndSars protest, destruction of properties and killings that happened in the past.
Egbetokun warned that going forward, any Police personnel caught indulging in the prohibited acts will be punished according to the commissioner of police of the Command and their supervisors.
The statement reads, “Henceforth, there should be no unnecessary arrest and detention of youths, collection of phones, checking of phones at checkpoints, these should stop.
“This attitude is portraying the Nigeria Police Force in bad image.
“All these culminated to endsars protest, destroying of properties, killings in the past.
“NIGPOL DOPS direct you desist from such unlawful acts. Anyone caught will be disciplined.”
