As recently as 60 years ago when Africans were already excelling across the world, there were still places in Europe and America were black people were treated as circus animals, kept in a zoo to be inspected and jeered at by white people. An article features a series of photos that present the shocking treatment of Africans who were sold into slavery in the 1800s becoming entertainment spectacles for white people.

This viral photo of a little African girl being fed from behind a wooden barricade was taken in Brussels, Belgium in 1958.

In 1904, the city of Missouri hosted a ‘Savage Olympics Exhibition’ that featured Africans participating in a mock sporting event

Another African, a Congolese named Ota Benga who was kept in New York’s Bronx Zoo was exhibited to more than 40,000 people over a two year period. He was eventually released but unable to adapt to normal life, he committed suicide six years later.

The article goes on to show Asian babies that were also treated as displays in the human zoos. The images are jarring and puts into another perspectives the struggles black people had to overcome in the last century.
