CHAOS has descended in a Parisian neighbourhood after a policeman was accused of sexually assaulting a young man with a truncheon.

Last Thursday four officers arrived at a housing estate in Aulnay-sous-Bois north of Paris where they began to stop youths and asked to see their identity papers.

Amateur video shows the 22-year-old victim, identified as Theo, being arrested.

But in harrowing scenes edited out of the clip, the police allegedly forced the young man to the ground and one officer allegedly inserting the telescopic truncheon into the man’s anal passage.

The man was rushed to hospital and was reportedly “traumatised” with a “severe wound”.

One of the four officers involved has been charged with rape and three other officers were charged with assault.

The alleged incident has led to seething locals taking to the streets surrounding the estate in protest at the police.

Some have been carrying banners that read “Justice for Theo” while others have used graffiti to express themselves with one phrase claiming: “Police, rapists”.

At least 3,000 people flocked to the estate last Saturday where a car was set alight and bus shelters were smashed. On Sunday, riot police were sent into the area.

Benoit Hamon, the Socialist presidential candidate said: “Police represent the republic that they protect. There is an urgent need to reestablish confidence.”

A march is planned though the estate today, and there are fears that it too could descend into violence.

A local police source said: “We are doing everything possible to maintain public order. Gangs of youths have been attacking us, and setting property on fire every night. The fear is that this violence will escalate.
