The out-of-favour Manchester United captain did not travel down to London after picking up an injury in training

Wayne Rooney is set to miss Manchester United’s clash with Chelsea on Sunday after picking up a muscle injury in training.

Rooney made his first start in five games on Thursday in the 4-1 Europa League win over Fenerbahce at Old Trafford but looked likely to be replaced by Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the trip to Stamford Bridge.

However, the United skipper has failed to make the journey to London after sustaining a muscle injury during preparations for the key clash.

“I will never make that decision,” he told Sky Sports News . “A player of his stature, a player of his history in the club will never get to a point where the club or manager want to make that decision for him.”

But the Portuguese takes on his former club in a league fixture for the first time on Sunday without Rooney in tow.

Rooney, who turns 31 on Monday, last started in the Premier League on September 18 in a 3-1 defeat at Watford and has since lost his England starting spot under interim manager Gareth Southgate.

United arrive at Stamford Bridge looking to extend a six-match unbeaten run in all competitions.
