Arsene Wenger is making concerted efforts to land two big footballers to boost the changes of silverware in Arsenal after a woeful 4-3 loss to Liverpool FC at the Emirates stadium in North London.

The Gunners have been searching for a new central defender all summer and have turned their attention to a Portugal international with two weeks of the window to go.

According to strong rumours, Arsenal have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Southampton defender, Jose Fonte, according to ESPN.

The Gunners are in desperate need of a new centre-back following injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel, with the inexperienced Calum Chambers and Rob Holding starting the 4-3 defeat to Liverpool.

Fonte has also emerged as a target for United manager Jose Mourinho in the last week and is valued by Southampton at £10 million.

In the same vein, Arsenal have had a £16 million offer for Mario Lemina rejected by Juventus, according to TuttoMercatoWeb.

The Serie A champions are prepared to let the midfielder leave this summer, despite only signing him on a permanent deal from Marseille at the end of last season, but they are demanding at least £20m.

Meanwhile, Arsenal remains confident of signing Shkodran Mustafi as transfer talks between the Gunners and Valencia continue.
