Flood Claims Live Of 7-Year-Old Girl In Kaduna, Wrecks Havoc

A seven -year -old girl, Theresa James, reportedly drowned in a flood on Friday, August 22 in Anguwar Yelwa community, Chikun local government area of Kaduna State.
The flood which was brought about by a two-day heavy downpour also destroyed a section of the Anguwar Yelwa Sabo Bridge, cutting away some parts of the community from the Kaduna metropolis and washed away houses.
According to one Solomon Daye, a resident of the area who spoke to The Nation,they had retired for the night when the rain started only to wake up and find their homes flooded.
He explained that one of his neighbours had left her four children and gone for a night vigil. Three of them were sleeping on the bed while one was sleeping on the floor. When the foolds came, the three who slept on the bed were raised up while the one on the floor could not escape and drowned in the flood.
“When concern residents arrived to rescue the children, they didn’t even know there were four of them in the house, it was after the rain subsided and they went to arrange the room that they found the body of Theresa,” he said.
Calling on the Kaduna State Government to come to their aid, the Shepherd in-charge, Cherubim and Seraphim Church Movement, Rachel Olaoye said this is not the first time the community would experience flooding.
Nigeria has faced an unprecedentedflood disaster resulting in loss of lives and property running into billions of Naira.
The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), had forecast that over 23 states in Nigeria would experience flooding in 2014 and Kaduna was one of the states mentioned as moderate flood risk areas
