England FA to investigate Alvaro Morata chant

The Football Association has confirmed it intends to open an investigation into the Alvaro Morata chant sung by Chelsea supporters during the recent win over Leicester City.

Morata opened the scoring as Antonio Conte’s side won 2-1 at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, although the match was marred by the offensive chant which contains an anti-Semitic reference to Chelsea’s cross-city rivals Tottenham.

Chelsea director of communications Steve Atkins condemned the chant in a statement on Saturday evening, while Kick It Out urged the Blues to ban any supporters found guilty of singing the song.

“The club and the players appreciate the fans passionate support away from home, of course, but the language in that song is not acceptable at all I’ve spoken to Alvaro about it,” said Atkins.

“Alvaro does not want to be connected with that particular song in any way and both the player and club request the supporters stop singing it with immediate effect.”

The Football Association will now “seek observations” from Chelsea as they begin their investigation into the chant.
