12 Retired Teachers Die In 10 Months— SUBEB Chairman
CALABAR—Chairman, Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Dr Stephen Odey, has said that out of the 440 cases of retirement in the state, 12 teachers have died within a period of 10 months.
Odey during the Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education, SMASE, Cycle II workshop for teachers held at the College of Education Akamkpa, said that out of the 440, those who retired include 404 teaching staff, 24 non-teaching staff while 12 teaching and non-teaching staff died in 10 months.
He said, “From October 2015 till date, we have had about 440 cases of retirement and death of teaching and non-teaching staff in primary schools in the state.”
Odey maintained that against this backdrop, the Board would in the near future need to recruit about 500 to 1000 teachers, adding that the applicants would be subjected to aptitude test and oral interview.
According to him, “We must do things differently to achieve excellent result; together we must change the system and harness the best potential to build capacity and enhance our primary educational system.”
Odey who reiterated the importance of training for teachers, added, “a teacher that has not been trained for a long time is like an old knife that you have left by the side of your garden that you no longer use. We at Cross River SUBEB and UBEC attach so much importance to training.
“There will be other subsequent trainings for teachers across the state, because we are going to give priority to training of teachers, apart from UBEC trainings, we at SUBEB will set up trainings that will groom you in all aspects not only limiting you to lesson note writing,” he explained.
