Manchester United sack manager Erik ten Hag after dismal start to season
Manchester United have announced that they have finally parted ways with struggling manager Erik ten Hag, with the Red Devils languishing down in 14th in the Premier League following the weekend’s loss to West Ham.
In an official statement, United confirmed Ten Hag’s exit and that Ruud van Nistelrooy will take interim charge of the side alongside the current coaching team until a permanent successor is appointed.
“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager,” the club said.
“Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.
“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”
The Dutchman’s job was the subject of speculation for most of last season as United recorded their worst Premier League finish in eighth, and with British billionaire and INEOS chairman Jim Ratcliffe taking charge of football operations.
A surprise FA Cup final win over Manchester City, however, plus the fact Ten Hag was able to blame numerous injuries for their poor form earned Ten Hag another chance.
He signed a new contract to extend his stay until 2026 and get another chance to restore the 20-time English league champions to former glories.
In his first season, Ten Hag secured a third-place finish and won the Carabao Cup, securing the club’s first trophy since 2017.
