“If you removed fuel subsidy, show us where it is going into so it can be tracked” – Peter Obi tells FG
Peter Obi has once again addressed the ongoing debate about the removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria.
In an interview with News Central, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate emphasized the need for transparency in government figures. He argued that if subsidy has truly been removed, the government should clearly outline the projects where the savings are being redirected, allowing for accountability and tracking. Obi also pointed out that while subsidy has been lifted, the country’s debt continues to rise alongside the cost of living, raising concerns about the overall impact on citizens.
He further advocated for the preservation of democracy in Nigeria, stressing the importance of biometric systems and greater scrutiny in Nigeria’s borrowing and spending. He highlighted the need to prioritize areas requiring urgent attention to improve the nation’s development.
Regarding Rabiu Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, who recently expressed confidence in winning the 2027 election, Obi stated that his focus is on the current struggles of Nigerians, not on future elections. He made it clear that he is not desperate for the presidency.
Addressing the prosecution of #EndBadGovernance protesters, Obi reaffirmed the right of citizens to peaceful protest. He suggested that, rather than resorting to punitive measures, the federal government should engage with protesters in dialogue, noting that they had provided ample notice for their demonstrations. Reflecting on his time as governor of Anambra State, Obi recalled handling similar situations by engaging directly with protesters when they shut down government agencies.
