“The South-East Feel They Don’t Have A Problem, But We In The North Have A Problem” – Yerima Shettima Lament
According to the report from the Vanguard, In a recent interview, Yerima Shettima, the National President of the Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF), critically assessed the Northern region’s engagement in the ongoing protests, asserting that the region has been severely marginalized by government policies. Shettima’s remarks highlight a stark contrast between the North’s dire situation and the South-East’s perceived detachment from the unrest.
Addressing the South-East’s decision to refrain from participating in the protests, Shettima stated, “They feel they don’t have a problem, but we in the North have a problem. The North is experiencing hunger.”
He emphasized that the North’s involvement in the protests stems from a profound sense of deprivation and dissatisfaction, which he attributes to a broader issue of neglect and poor governance.
Shettima further elaborated on the North’s grievances by noting the disparity between the region’s economic realities and the conduct of those in governmental positions.
According to Shettima, “We, the stakeholders, know what we go through because we have something to do. Out of what we work for, we bring it to assist our people. But those who have appointments in government are only interested in their interests.”
This criticism underscores a perceived disconnect between the needs of ordinary citizens and the actions of those in power, with Shettima suggesting that the government’s focus is misaligned with the pressing needs of the North.
Through these comments, Shettima underscores the acute sense of marginalization felt in the North, contrasting it with the relative indifference of the South-East and highlighting a broader critique of government efficacy and accountability….
