Barely 24 hours after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 seeking to reinstate the old anthem, pupils of a school in Abuja, Oprite Christian International School, have been spotted singing the song flawlessly.

In a video making the rounds online, the brilliant ‘future generation of Nigeria’ were seen on their school’s assembly ground as they lined up according to their classes. They captured the attention and admiration of many as they passionately sang the old national anthem during their school assembly.

The old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” was used from 1960, when Nigeria gained independence, until it was replaced by “Arise, O Compatriots” in 1978. The lyrics of the anthem were penned by Lillian Jean Williams, a British expatriate residing in Nigeria during its independence, while Frances Berda composed the music.

According to the government, the old anthem was reinstated because it serves as reminder of the country’s history, struggles, and triumphs. It also preaches unity.

The students’ clear voices and precise rendition of the anthem stirred emotions among teachers, parents, and fellow students, demonstrating the timeless relevance of this piece of national history.

The heartwarming performance of the primary school student singing old anthem fluently on assembly went viral online as social media users shared their thoughts.
