“Parents have sacrificed their God-given task on the altar of neglect” – Governor Soludo’s wife mourns newborn baby who died after rescue from pit toilet
The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Nonye Soludo, has mourned the newborn baby boy who died after he was rescued from a pit toilet in Otuocha community in Anambra East Local Government Area of the state.
LIB reported that the baby was thrown into the pit by his 20-year-old mother, Nwaedoka Chidimma, from Izzi community in Ebonyi State after delivery on Sunday, August 27, 2023.
The baby was rescued on Tuesday, August 29, after some residents heard him crying from the pit toilet, and was rushed to the hospital where he died on Wednesday while receiving medical treatment.
Reacting to the incident, Mrs. Soludo said that parents and guardians have sacrificed their God-given task on the altar of neglect.
“I’m distraught to receive news of the passing of the beautiful baby boy who was just rescued and rushed to hospital, three days after his teenage mother delivered and left him for death in a pit toilet. I had earnestly prayed and hoped to visit the baby when he’s received adequate medical care and certified all right,” she said in a statement signed by her media aide, Daniel Ezeigwe.
“This shocking news hits me deeply, more so as a mother who understands the pains of childbirth and the joy of carrying your own child. However, this particular incident draws our attention again to the threatening image of what our society is really up against.
“As I’ve said on many occasions, there’s a lot before parents, guardians, social institutions and the entire society to ensure that we do not lose sight of the home and the sacredness of child raising. We cannot afford to continue to sacrifice our God-given task on the altar of neglect”
