Mourinho set to sign Greenwood at Roma

Manchester United have already been contacted by teams keen on signing Mason Greenwood, after they announced the forward will leave the club..

Following a five-month probe, Old Trafford officials found the 21-year-old had not committed a string of serious offences he had been charged with but decided, along with the player, that it would be best if he continued his career elsewhere.

Mail Sport understands a number of sides have been in touch to register their interest in Greenwood, who will not play for United again.

It is unlikely the forward, who has an England cap, will move to another club in this country. Instead, a switch abroad is on the cards with interest from Italy, Turkey and elsewhere. Former United manager Jose Mourinho, now at Roma, is an admirer.

Greenwood was arrested in January last year after harrowing material was published online. He was suspended by the club and later charged with a number of offences, including attempted rape and assault.

Those charges were dropped in February following the withdrawal of witnesses and the emergence of new evidence. But Greenwood remained suspended while United carried out their own investigation.

In a lengthy statement, the club said that while they believed the player was not guilty of the offences with which he had been charged, he had made mistakes and would still be leaving.

The details of Greenwood’s departure are being ironed out. He will either depart on a permanent deal, a loan or will reach an agreement over the termination of his £75,000-a-week contract, which runs until the summer of 2025.

United said in a statement: ‘All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United.

‘It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford and we will now work with Mason to achieve that. Based on the evidence available, we have concluded material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged.

‘That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for.’

In a statement, Greenwood accepted he made mistakes and would take his ‘share of responsibility’.

‘I did not do the things I was accused of,’ he said, adding: ‘Today’s decision has been a collaborative process between Manchester United, my family and me. The best decision is for me to continue my career away from Old Trafford, where my presence will not be a distraction.’
