Total economic shutdown loom as NLC announces date to embark on indefinite strike over increase in fuel price
Nigeria might soon experience a fresh economic shutdown as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) issued the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum to reverse all perceived anti-poor policies, including the recent hike in the pump price of petrol.
NLC made the decision at its Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting held on Tuesday, July 25, at the Abuja Labour House.
The labour union said if the government refused to reverse all perceived anti-poor policies, its members will embark on an indefinite nationwide strike from August 2, 2023.
The union said the government’s recent actions, including the hike in the pump price of petrol, the increase in electricity tariff, and the planned removal of fuel subsidy, are insensitive to the plight of the poor and working people.
The union also directed all its affiliates and state councils to immediately begin mobilizing workers and other Nigerians, including civil society allies, for a long-lasting strike and mass protests.
