Tension as presidential election tribunal commences
Anxiety, tension rents Nigeria’s political atmosphere as the presidential election petition tribunal commences proceedings in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
The tribunal begin the pre-hearing of the petitions challenging the outcome of the February 25 presidential election.
The opposition candidates, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, are disputing the declaration of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu as the winner of the election.
Atiku is asking the court, among others, to order the electoral body to conduct a fresh election following alleged irregularities at polling units during the presidential poll.
While Obi said that Tinubu failed to win the majority of lawful votes and could not garner one-quarter of the votes in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC Bola Tinubu polled 8,794,726 votes to win the election, Atiku came second with 6,984,520 votes, Peter Obi trailed as the second runner-up with 6,101,533 votes.
