Sergio Ramos weighs in on the great GOAT debate after playing with both Ronaldo and Messi
Sergio Ramos knows a thing or two about the very best in the world, having partnered both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi on the football field.
Ramos and Ronaldo were colleagues at Real Madrid, where for a long time they suffered at the hands of rival Messi when he was at Barcelona..
However, Ramos left Spain for PSG in July 2021, just a month before the Argentina star left Barcelona for Paris.
Now the 36-year-old has experienced what it is like to play with both legends of the modern game, he is clear about his favourite of the two – the one he would call the GOAT.
However, it may be the answer he would have been expected to give, since he was speaking to PSG TV at the time.
As reported by Goal, Ramos told the club’s media: ‘There was suffering for several years playing against Messi. I am now enjoying him.
‘He is the best player football has ever produced.’
Messi holds the record for the most goals scored in the history of El Clasico, so Ramos is possibly glad to have put their past rivalry aside to call the forward a colleague in France, rather than facing the prospect of trying to nullify him yet again.
The 35-year-old has won seven Ballon d’Or awards, and capped off his international career by finally getting his hands on the World Cup trophy as Argentina beat France in Qatar in December.
Meanwhile Ronaldo, who opened his account for new club Al-Nassr to equalise with a stoppage-time penalty on Friday, may be less than thrilled to discover that Ramos does not rate him as highly as his long-time Argentinian foe.
The pair were in discussion with each other just a few weeks ago as the Parisian side travelled to Saudi Arabia to face a Riyadh All-Stars team, featuring the new Portuguese recruit.
