JUST IN: Suspected gunmen kill Labour Party senatorial candidate in Enugu 48 hours to election

Gunmen terrorising the Southeast region have killed the Labour Party senatorial candidate for Enugu East Senatorial District, Prof Oyibo Chukwu.


This incident which is coming about 48 hours before the Presidential and National Assembly elections occurred late Wednesday evening, February 22, 2023.

It was gathered the senatorial candidate was killed alongside five others at Amaechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The killers were also said to have burnt him and other victims inside his car.

The governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Chijioke Edeoga, confirmed the unfortunate incident, saying his party members are being targeted for assassination by political parties which felt threatened by the rise of the Labour Party in the state.

Peter Obi, Labour Party Presidential Candidate, hails from South East, which has been a flashpoint, even before the election period.

Suspected militants have vowed to cripple election in the region but security forces have assured residents that they are on top of the situation.

Similarly, a campaign vehicle belonging to a House of Representatives member, Hon. Offor Chukwuegbo was also said to have been set ablaze within the same axis. Chukwuegbo is the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate for the Enugu North/South Federal Constituency.

It is unclear the number of casualties recorded in the attack, but the driver of the mini-bus was reportedly killed.

The Enugu police command is yet to react to the two incidents.
