The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo has disclosed the response former President Olusegun Obasanjo gave him when he went to seek his support in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In an interview with Arise TV, Prince Adewole was asked “From Kano, you rushed straight to Abeokuta to meet with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the papers reported that your main pitch was for him to ditch Peter Obi and support you. What did you come away with from that meeting? Did Obasanjo assure you that he will no longer support Peter Obi and will support your ticket?”.

In his reply, Prince Adewole said when he tried to convince Obasanjo to back him over the Labour Party presidential candidate who he had endorsed, Obasanjo boldly told him that he finds him (Prince Adewole) okay but he can only support one candidate and he has already made his choice. Speaking further, Prince Adewole stated that many people who were present in the meeting told him to keep seeking Obasanjo’s support and that he might get it.

In his exact words,

“I went to Ogun Abeokuta to do a rally but as tradition demands, you can’t come to a city where a living Head of State is located and not pay a courtesy call. I went to former President Obasanjo, he doesn’t pull punches so I can’t pretend that I didn’t know he had taken a public stance in supporting Peter Obi but the reasons he gave [for supporting Obi] as far as SDP is concerned fitted me more than it fitted the person he eventually said he was going to support.

“We sat down and spent like two and half hours exchanging Ideas, talking about policy issues, raising my concerns, he understood me and I understood him. Because he is not a shy person to express his opinion and I know that I am not a shy person to express my opinion and I concluded by saying look what you have said now points to me so it doesn’t point to the other direction”. So that is it and he stood his ground and said ‘well but in any case, I find you okay but I have to make one choice and I have made my choice. Many people who were there came with the idea that we should keep talking to him we might break through”.
