Barcelona’s finances are set to nosedive again if the Catalan club gets eliminated early from the UEFA Champions League, following a poor start to this season’s campaign.

The Spanish giants risk being knocked out of Europe’s elite club competition in the group stage after they were held to a 3-3 draw by Inter Milan at Camp Nou on Wednesday night.

According to the Daily Mail, Barcelona will lose as much as £18million if they fail to progress out of the Champions League group stage this season, after spending heavily to rebuild the squad this summer.

The Catalans spent over £132m on player transfers in the summer. To pay for the spending however, they have budgeted for the team to reach the last eight as a minimum this season.

Barcelona are currently third in Group C with 4 points from their opening 4 games, and are behind Bayern Munich and Inter Milan respectively in the group.

Xavi unhappy with defensive mistakes Meanwhile, Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandes has blamed defensive errors for his side’s 3-3 draw against Inter Milan which put the La Liga club in a precarious situation, SB Nation reports.

The results mean Barcelona look destined to head out of the Champions League group stages and into the Europa League for a second straight season.

Inter Milan looks set to beat Barcelona to the round of 16 slot if the Serie A giants defeat Viktoria Plzen next time out, and Xavi feels his team has been hard done by in Europe’s top competition.
