Edo housewife commits suicide, police arrest husband

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 27-year-old woman, Mrs. Cynthia Agho, who allegedly committed suicide by hanging..



The actual cause of her death is however enmeshed in controversy, following rumours that her husband may have killed her and faked it as suicide.

The incident occurred on 7 July, 2022, at No. 10, Omozise Street, off Street 2, Off Lucky Way, Benin City, the state capital.

The Command’s spokesman, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, described the incident as “a case of suspected suicide”.

He added that the woman was found by police operatives who visited the scene and found the woman dangling in a rope on her neck, tied to the ceiling fan in her bedroom.

It’s a case of suspected suicide. On the 7th of July, 2022,at about 1.30 am, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Aduwawa Police Station, Benin City, received information from the Command’s control room that a certain woman committed suicide by hanging.

“Acting on that distress call, the Divisional Police Officer and his men moved down to the scene of crime where they met a certain woman who was later identified by her husband, one Emmanuel Umoru, as Mrs. Cynthia Agho,,swinging in a rope tied on the ceiling fan inside her bedroom.

“Corpse was photographed, lower down and evacuated to the clinic called Our Clinic Hospital mortuary for autopsy.

“Preliminary investigation has commenced to find out whether it is a case of suspected suicide or murder.


“The husband of the woman, Mr. Emmanuel Umoru is currently undergoing investigation at Aduwawa Police Division, Benin City.

The case will be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation,” Nwabuzor said.
