On April 19, 2021, President Idriss Déby was slain while fighting militants who wanted to overthrow his administration.
The late President was injured and died while directing his forces in the war against northern separatists.
For more than 30 years, he had been in charge of the country. After his death, Mahamat Idriss Deby Iton, his son, succeeded him as president of the Republic of Chad.
Chad’s transitional military council also has him as chairman.
He was 37 years old when he succeeded his father as head of the family business.
Between 2005 and 2010, a number of conflicts occurred, notably the Battle of Ifoghas in Tigharghar, Chad, and the Battle of Am Dam in Northern Mali in 2012.
Mahamat took part in these battles. He didn’t take part in the Northern Mali offensive until the year 2021.
He will serve as Chad’s acting president for the next 18 months.
After Idriss Deby’s death, the military dismissed the government.
