The Federal House of Representatives has criticized the activities of bandits in Plateau state, and the recent increase in the number of terrorist-related deaths in various northern states. Aside from blaming President Muhammadu Buhari, the lawmakers demanded that the Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi (retd.), and Minister of National Security, Babagana Monguno (retd.) be fired for failing to effectively carry out their responsibilities of securing the country’s borders. The call was made during a Plenary session on Wednesday, April 13, 2022.

An outbreak of savage bandit attacks in Benue, Taraba, and Plateau states over the weekend prompted the call for a ceasefire. On Sunday, April 10, suspected bandits attacked the Wase and Kanam settlements in Plateau, killing no less than 70 people. The attacks occurred in both communities.

Another 25 people were killed the following Monday in two local governments in Benue State as a result of bandits attack, which occurred barely 24 hours after the Plateau attack. In response to the killings in Plateau State, Ahmed Wase, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, accused security agents and military men of assisting the criminals.

“In my own neighborhood, we had a soldier who was meant to be stationed in Zamfara who was given a six-month permit that was continuous. He was taken into custody for providing uniforms to the criminals.

He has not yet been found guilty and sentenced to a court martial. If his station was in Zamfara and he was discovered in Plateau at the same time, who was it that issued him the pass, and what was their motivation for issuing a six-month pass to a security agent in Nigeria?

Another individual from the same community was apprehended with ammunition. For the time being, I’m clueless. They were insistent that they would not act despite the fact that we had already brought the motion to them’s attention ” According to the lawmaker.

It is interesting to note that the demand by lawmakers for the removal of both the Defence Minister and the National Security Adviser coincides with the call by Northern elders for President Muhammadu Buhari to resign from his position as the country’s Commander in Chief. This was a call that was swiftly rejected by the president.
