A crazed Turkey fan pointed a gun and fired it against his television screen after seeing Burak Yilmaz miss a crucial penalty in the World Cup semi-final play-off vs Portugal..

Turkey were beaten 3-1, with Portugal advancing to the final against North Macedonian, who pulled off a shock last-gasp win over Euro 2020 winners Italy.

Portugal were 2-0 up and cruising courtesy of goals from Otavio and Diogo Jota in the first half. But then veteran striker Yilmaz halved the deficit in the 65th minute and set up a tight end to the game.

The Turkey captain would have the chance to level matters and make it 2-2 from the spot after his side were awarded a penalty.

However the 36-year-old got it all wrong and blazed his spot-kick well over the bar in the 85th minute. Portugal would then seal the win in stoppage time, with substitute Matheus Nunes providing the sucker punch in stoppage time.

And one Turkey supporter did not take it well. Footage has circulated of the fan drawing a pistol against the screen as Yilmaz stood over the ball.

When, he missed, the weapon is shockingly loaded and fired towards the TV.

Yilmaz, meanwhile, immediately announced his retirement from the Turkey national team and will not play in a World Cup again.

Speaking to reporters, an emotional Yilmaz said: “I don’t know how I didn’t score, I’m still in shock. We upset our country. I’m sorry. I’m very sorry. This was my last World Cup chance. As of today, this is over.

“I said to myself it was a definite goal when we got the penalty. I started thinking about the future. I am disappointed because I never thought about missing it. I’m sorry. I’m going to score this penalty every night of my life, maybe without sleep, in my dreams.

“I wouldn’t want to quit after a game like this, but I don’t think it’s right to continue. Thank you to my coaches.”

Yilmaz finishes with 31 goals in 77 games for his country.
