AFCON 2021: ‘Even my grandmother would have given Egypt penalty’ – Carlos Queiroz laments 1-0 loss to Nigeria
Egypt coach, Carlos Queiroz has slammed the video assistant referee [VAR] for not giving his side a penalty during their game against Nigeria on Tuesday..
Nigeria defeated the North African giants 1-0 in Tuesday’s Group D clash at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
And the Portuguese head coach is alleging that his side was denied a penalty ten minutes to the end of the game.
The Egyptian players were all over the referee, Bakary Gassama, to give them a penalty, insisting Moses Simon had fouled Zizo.
VAR was consulted and after the review, the centre referee’s initial decision stood.
Queiroz said that even his ground mother would have spotted the foul and awarded a penalty.
“In the second half, there was a penalty very clear for us that the referee did not whistle, and the VAR did not intervene,” the Portuguese coach said, according to Africa Foot United.
“Maybe at that time the VAR was not working. There was clearly a penalty. It was not our day, it was also not a good day for refereeing.
“Even my grandmother would have blown for this penalty on the fault on our player. It’s a disaster because there are referees from VAR.
“This is unacceptable. Watch the action yourself. It’s amazing that with all these referees, no one indicated the fault.”
