Ajax star Dusan Tadic has broken Lionel Messi’s record for the most assists in a calendar year..

Messi set the record of 36 assists in 2011 when he was playing for Barcelona and his feat remained unmatched for a decade.

However, it has now been surpassed by Tadic, with the International Champions Cup stating that the Serbia international has got 37 assists this year.

There is still a chance that Tadic could extend his record further, with Ajax having two more games remaining in 2021 – away to Feyenoord and at home to Fortuna Sittard.

Messi set the record playing in a Barcelona side which is widely regarded as one of the greatest in football history. In 2011 Messi won the Champions League and LaLiga with Barcelona.

Tadic, who was previously at Southampton, has enjoyed a hugely impressive 2021 as he helped Ajax to win the double as well as being crowned the Dutch footballer of the year.

Despite being 33 years old, Tadic isn’t showing any signs of slowing down and has contributed eleven assists in the Eredivisie so far this campaign.

In addition to frequently creating chances for his team-mates, Tadic also poses a goal threat, as demonstrated by the fact that he has scored six league goals this season.

Ajax face a battle to retain the Eredvisie title this season – they are currently one point adrift of leaders PSV.
