Sir Alex Ferguson visits Manchester United training ground

Sir Alex Ferguson has visited the Manchester United training complex amid mounting pressure on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer..

Ferguson and the former United chairman Martin Edwards are understood to have been present at the club’s Carrington training ground, where Solskjaer arrived early this morning for the first-team’s training session.

Sources insist Solskjaer is still on borrowed time as United manager but the club have failed to identify a replacement.

Solskjaer verbally agreed to replace Jose Mourinho as caretaker manager two months prior to his appointment on December 19 2018. Solskjaer flew to Manchester in October and attended United’s 1-0 home defeat to Juventus in the Champions League group stage.

Dismissing Solskjaer was not considered an option by the United hierarchy prior to Sunday’s 5-0 thrashing by Liverpool but there has been a shift at boardroom level and consideration was given to sacking Solskjaer on Monday.

The executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who was not in attendance for the drubbing by Liverpool, is not believed to be at Carrington today.

It is understood United have not made any concrete contact with Conte amid their reluctance to sack Solskjaer, who is present for Tuesday’s first-team training session at the club’s Carrington complex.

Conte is out of work following his departure from Inter and held discussions with Tottenham about replacing Jose Mourinho in the summer.

The 52-year-old had not identified United as an obvious option for his next job but the club’s chastening form, compounded by the humiliation by Liverpool, has piled the pressure on Solskjaer.

As it stands, Solskjaer is set to still be the United manager for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Tottenham
