Arsene Wenger recruits John Terry, Michael Owen, Drogba as FIFA fights to host World Cup every 2 years
Former Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger has recruited John Terry and Michael Owen into FIFA’s heavy artillery in the battle to force through a World Cup every two years, according to The Sun, UK..
Terry and Owen are among a host of legendary ex-internationals announced as the new members of FIFA’s “Technical Advisory Group”.
Didier Drogba, Geremi, German, Jurgen Klinsmann and Lothar Matthaus, Marco Materazzi, Roberto Carlos, Peter Schmeichel and Yaya Toure are other football greats also enlisted.
They will give heavyweight support as Wenger, alongside Fifa President, officially outlines his World Cup proposals despite the growing criticism from European football.
The European Club Association, ECA, has held a two-day emergency meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, for the purpose of kicking against this move by Wenger and the Fifa President in Geneva.
But Wenger and FIFA President Gianni Infantino believe their campaign is gaining momentum as there is thought to be serious support for the idea outside Europe, which could be put to a vote of the 211 Fifa members next year.
FIFA was accused in the Geneva meeting of attempting to railroad the plans without any proper consultation of football stakeholders.
The Chief Executive of Manchester City, Ferran Soriano, who is among those making their objections to the move public, said, according to The Sun, “There is no space for anything like this. No room at all.
“The players cannot play more games, that’s for sure.”
Also, Bayern Munich director and senior lawyer Michael Gerlinger added, “We haven’t received any proposals on the table from FIFA or what this would look like.
”We hear that FIFA might want to do this quickly but that will be very challenging, especially as we haven’t seen any of the details.
“There would be so many things to negotiate, not just the calendar.”
And ECA and PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi, said, “I have been very clear – we want to have engagement.
“But we have had no approaches from FIFA. maybe they could approach us – and then we might have a discussion.”
