Manchester United defender Phil Jones has refused to surrender his No. 4 shirt to new signing Raphael Varane, according to Manchester Evening News.

Varane, who was unveiled to United fans after completing a move worth around £42.7m from Real Madrid, will now wear the No.19 at Old Trafford..

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side unveiled the World Cup winner in front of a packed Old Trafford crowd before their 5-1 bashing of Leeds United in the Premier League opener.

Varane held up his new shirt to the United supporters, who gave their new signing a huge ovation.

The former Real Madrid defender wanted the No.4 shirt following his departure from Real Madrid, however, the report has it that Jones, who hasn’t played for the Red Devils since January 2020, wanted to keep his jersey.

The Englishman has not played for United and has been on the sidelined for over 18 months due to injury.

But the club’s manager, Solskjaer indicated this week that the England international is closing in on a return.

“I’m impressed by his resilience in training,” Solskjaer said this week.
