Identities Of Escaped Owerri Prison Inmates Released By Nigerian Correctional Service
The identities of 36 inmates who fled custody on Monday from the Owerri Prison has been released by the Nigerian correctional service..
Recall that on Monday, the Owerri Correctional Facility was attacked by gunmen and led to the fleeing of over 1,800 inmates. Reports also suggested that only 35 inmates refused to run away away during the attack.
The acting Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service John Mrabure confirmed the development in a statement signed by the spokesperson for the corrections, Francis Enobore saying about 1844 inmates regained freedom.
Some of the inmates willingly reported back to the facility, while a number of them were also recaptured. David Ubong who happens to be one of the escapees was nabbed by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command. Another rearrest of 11 prisoners was done by the men of the 211 Nigerian Airforce Base, Owerri.
In a fresh update from the NCS, the names and photos of 36 inmates on the run were published online. It still remains tentative as to the number of remaining escapees.
Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service John Mrabure pleaded in his statement saying residents and good citizens should help in the rearrest of the inmates on the run by providing reliable information on them.
In other news, a prison riot which took place in Bauchi State left two officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) and five prison inmates injured.
Confirming the incident to Channels Television, Abubakar Adamu, NCS’ spokesperson said reinforcement was called on to put a stop to the jailbreaks in Bauchi State. He also denied reports of sporadic gunshots being witnessed during the unrest.
