Fact-check: Is it true that 7,200 penises were shipped from Nigeria to China?
Thousands of human penises shipped from Nigeria in a refrigerated container were intercepted in China, according to an unconfirmed report on social media and blogs in Nigeria..
The article was first published by World News Daily Report on March 19, 2021, according to data provided by social media monitoring tool CrowdTangle.
Checks showed that the story originated on the satirical website, and the accompanying photo was published in an article about a pangolin seizure in 2020.
It has been shared over 700 times on WhatsApp, Facebook and reposted by online news sites including Naija Tell, The Podium, Gbetu TV, Town Crier, and Sundiata Post.
WNDRâs story was also published on Instagram, as well as on Twitter.
Nigeriaâs Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, who is one of those who shared it, tweeted, âA ship from Nigeria has been impounded in China whilst trying to smuggle in 7,200 penises.
âHundreds of thousands of Nigerian penises are smuggled into China every year. Nigeria is the worldâs largest exporter of penises and this is why kidnapping and ritual killings are rife here.
âWhat do the Chinese do with these penises and why are they obsessed with Nigerian ones in particular? This is not a joke but a serious question.
âThe Chinese should leave our penises alone and those that procure them for them in Nigeria should be regarded as terrorists and eliminated.â
According to AFP, the recent article also circulated in other African countries, including Malawi, Uganda, Kenya, Ghana, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
