Some of the most valuable treasures of all time have been discovered completely by accident. Soldiers have discovered secret hoards of cash, and gold has been found in old tanks. Divers have found shipwrecks completely by chance. The Uluburun shipwreck is one of the oldest shipwrecks ever discovered, and it was found by accident by sponge diver Mehmet Çakir in 1998.

The Dead Sea Scrolls were first discovered in 1947 completely by accident by a group of Bedouin goat herders.

The Rosetta Stone was discovered completely by accident by Napoleon’ s forces in 1799. The Cuerdale Hoard is one of the greatest Viking treasure troves ever found, and it was found by accident when some workers were fixing a river embankment.
