Self-employed builder pulls own teeth out using ‘eight pints of Stella’ as anaesthetic

Self-employed builder Chris Savage had unbearable pain from his two front teeth, but couldn’t find an NHS dentist in his area with the capacity to take him on

Chris says the first extraction hurt so much, he had to leave it a full 24 hours before attempting the second one

A desperate dad driven crazy by dental pain pulled his own front teeth out with a pair of pliers after finding it impossible to sign up with an NHS dentist in his area.

Chris Savage self-medicated with eight pints of Stella Artois before yanking out the first of the teeth. That was so painful he had to wait a full 24 hours before he attempted the second one.

Chris, 42, damaged the teeth after coming off his bike, but despite calling 20 dentists in his area couldn’t find anyone to treat him.

So the self-employed builder decided to do the job himself.

It goes without saying that Star readers should NOT try this at home.
Divorced Chris, who lives in a shared house in Portsmouth, told reporters: “I ended up having to get very drunk the first time because I knew I didn’t want to do it – obviously.

“Nobody wants to take part of their own face away with a set of pliers with no real painkillers.

“I put the pliers on my tooth and the second I did that it hurt, so I took them away, waited five minutes, built up again and then thought I’ve just got to do it.
“It was a proper yank, a grip and pull – it’s come out. There’s no mucking about once you get to the point it’s coming out.”
He added: “The squelch noise as you pull it out is like nothing I’ve ever experienced and I thought ‘I’ve made a big mistake here’ then 10 minutes later there was a massive relief … but I couldn’t do that second one!”

He performed the second extraction sober, just using Nurofen to dull the pain, and admits he hadn’t looked up any of the essential aftercare procedures, just swilling his mouth out with salty water for hygiene.

‘It took a lot of balls to do it,” he says.
Despite making dozens of calls, Chris couldn’t find an NHS dentist in his area with capacity to take him on.

As a sole trader, Chris had lost his income due to lockdown and is living on Universal Credit, leaving him £50 a week to spend on food and bills – so he just didn’t have the cash to pay a private dentist.

Instead he decided to remove his own teeth as he did not want to borrow the £100 per tooth needed and get into debt.
Portsmouth dentist Phil Gowers, chairman of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Local Dental Committee, said: “I’d never recommend taking out your own teeth – that’s a very bad idea that can go horribly wrong.

“The obvious thing is sepsis, it kills more than 50,000 people (a year). Using (Chris’s method) is a recipe for disaster.”

A spokesman for NHS England and NHS Improvement South East commented: “If a patient has been clinically assessed as needing urgent treatment which cannot be carried out by a local dental practice they can be referred to one of the urgent dental care hubs which remain in place.”
