Paul Pogba speaks out about Jose Mourinho after United’s 5-1 victory over Cardiff
Paul Pogba stepped off the team bus with a beaming smile ahead of Manchester United’s impressive 5-1 victory over Cardiff City.
The French midfielder didn’t see eye-to-eye with Jose Mourinho, who lost his job earlier this week, and caused a stir with a social media post minutes after news of the Portuguese manager’s sacking had been confirmed.
Pogba posted a photo of himself alongside the message: ‘Caption this!’, much to the annoyance of many United supporters.
Former United captain Gary Neville was furious with the tweet, replying: “You do one as well!”
The tweet, which had reportedly been scheduled prior to the news of Mourinho’s departure, was swiftly deleted.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought Paul Pogba back into United’s starting line-up for the game against Cardiff and was repaid with a sublime performance from the World Cup winner.
Pogba provided three assists in United’s 5-1 victory, doubling his Premier League tally for the current campaign over the course of the 90 minutes.
Cardiff City v Manchester United – Premier League
Like the rest of his teammates, Pogba looked happy and confident on the pitch for the first time in a while.
The 25-year-old spoke about Mourinho for the first time after the match – per the Press Association’s Simon Peach – and made some comments that may come as a surprise to fans.
“We won trophies with Jose and I want to thank him for that,” Pogba said.
“We work even if not everything went well. But things went well and we won trophies.
“He makes me improve, as a person as well and that’s it.”
He added: “That’s the past, I want to thank him for that. I’m sure all the players are now looking to the next game, the points, and we have to go back into and we want to go back to the top of the league.
“That’s all I want to say. The performance of the team was great”
Nobody expected to hear Pogba publicly praise Mourinho after everything that’s happened between the two men in recent months.
Respect to him for doing so, though. It says a lot about him that he’s chosen to be positive, rather than negative, about the man who brought him back to Old Trafford.
Well played, Paul.
