No independence until FG rescues Sharibu – CAN
The Christian Association of Nigeria and the Catalysts for Global Peace and Justice Initiative , a civil society , on Tuesday said President Muhammadu Buhari must not allow the 2019 campaigns and political activities overshadow the rescue of Leah Sharibu and other Boko Haram captives , noting that Nigeria ’ s October 1 independence was invalid until the victims were rescued .
The CAN and CPJ in a joint briefing in Abuja said the government must muster all forces at its disposal to ensure that the insurgents did not carry out their threats on Sharibu and the two abducted female workers of the International Committee of the Red Cross , Hauwa Liman and Alice Ngaddah .
The CPJ convener , Abraham Aiyedogbon , who read the statement , said the Federal Government must not give Nigerians further promises for 2019 when it had failed to deliver on security of lives and property.
Aiyedogbon said, “ It is time to wake up, especially with the ultimatum placed on the life of Sharibu . I feel as pained , angry and disturbed as the parents of this girl . Our demand is that the government should rise to carry out its constitutional duties .
“They have no basis campaigning when they couldn’ t protect the future of the nation. What are you promising us when you couldn’ t protect the least of our citizens; the future of the nation? So , what are you promising us if you couldn’ t deliver on promises to stop insecurity ? Everything should be suspended until this rescue is achieved. There is no independence ; there is no freedom. We are all in captivity . You cannot be in captivity and be carrying out activities as usual .
“We are worried by the threat by the Boko Haram to kill abducted Dapchi schoolgirl , Leah Sharibu , and two female workers in their custody . We are also disturbed by the regularity and mindlessness with which herdsmen attack and kill innocent people in some parts of the country . We are alarmed at the inability of security agencies to arrest the activities of kidnappers , ritual killers and the insurgents.
He said, “ We call on the Federal Government to do all within its power to ensure the immediate release of Leah Sharibu . It is bad enough that following the abduction of over 200 Chibok schoolgirls in 2014, the Buhari administration still allowed a recurrence in February 2018 with the abduction of the Dapchi schoolgirls . ”
One of the CAN clerics , Rev William Okoye , who represented the CAN President , Rev Supo Ayokunle , in a brief remark, said the Federal Government must show more determination and political will to rescue Sharibu and other Boko Haram abductees .
