He’s not world class – Michael Owen blasts Chelsea striker

Former Real Madrid and England striker, Michael Owen has slammed Chelsea striker, Alvaro Morata.

Morata has endured a tough time since joining the West London club from Real Madrid in the summer of 2017 for an initial fee of £58million.

The 25-year-old did manage to find the net on Thursday evening, scoring the winner in Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Videoton in the Europa League encounter.

But after the match, Morata didn’t receive any praise from Owen, who claimed he was ‘decent’ but not ‘world class’.

“I’ve never been his [Morata] biggest fan, I must admit,” Owen told BT Sport.

“When Morata was at Real Madrid, he came on a lot, he scored a few goals – he did well in Italy.

“I’ve never had him in the top-notch striker bracket, I must admit.

“When he scored a few at the start of his Chelsea career, I thought ‘ooh, I’m going to eat my words here’ – but, in my opinion, he’s not world class.

“He’s decent but he’s not world class.

“He’s probably not good enough to be leading the line for Chelsea, playing in the Champions League every week.”
